The media is flooding with the recent news about Kamal Haasan, who has recently expressed displeasure in forming an alliance with the famous actor and politician Rajnikanth. He said, “His speech (the one in which Rajnikanth announced his political entry) had a certain hue. I hope it is not saffron”, have all been a part of the larger political spectrum. There are some famous actors, who have exclusively chosen to try their hands in Politics after having served as a Bollywood celeb. From Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Rekha and Gul Panag to Kamal Haasan and Rajnikanth, getting into politics is an option that’s easier to choose for actors, as they are already established as popular public figures.

Amitabh Bachchan

Amitabh Bachchan entered politics to support Rajiv Gandhi, a long term family friend. He contested against former UP chief Minister H. N. Bahuguna in the 8th Lok Sabha elections. Although he won, he resigned after 3 years.

Shabana Azmi

She has been inviting various offers from different political parties after having been nominated in the Rajya Sabha back in 1997. She however strives to achieve women empowerment independently and hence hasn’t joined any political party.

Shatrughan Sinha

He was popularly known as the health and family welfare minister during Vajpayee’s reign. He also defeated Shekhar Suman from Bihar. That’s not all. He held the portfolio of ministry of shipping. He was also seen heading BJP’s art and culture wing in May 2006.

Jaya Bachchan

She has spent a considerable amount of time with the Samajwadi Party. She shifted her ball game from cinema to politics in 2004. She also entered Rajya Sabha and was re-elected in 2012.

Dharmendra

His contribution to Bollywood is unprecedented. He has enabled characters like Viru in Sholay to gain a cult status. He joined BJP and evolved as an MP from the constituency of Bikaner.

Govinda

His contributions to Bollywood have been equally great but there was a decline in his career graph which he utilized to enter politics. He joined the Indian National Congress and became an MP for 5 years, 2004-09.

Hema Malini

She joined the BJP in 2004 and has been an active member since. She was also re-elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2011. She also won the 2014 general elections by 3,30,743 votes.

Many other Bollywood celebrities have chosen politics after their career in Bollywood or even while pursuing their Bollywood career. To say certain people pursue politics as a profession is to oversimplify things. The paradigms of every profession are more or less political.
