The 56th Governor of New York State, Andrew M. Cuomo, recently announced a $1.8 billion plan to transform the Sheridan Expressway and Bruckner Boulevard in the Bronx as reported in the New York Post. The project will create more than 4,000 new construction jobs in the South Bronx.
The infrastructure project, which will include pedestrian crossings and will better connect residents to the Bronx River waterfront, will cost an estimated $700 million with a scheduled completion date of 2019. “This is a road construction project and a bridge project larger than anything we have taken on in The Bronx in decades,” Cuomo said at the announcement.
Everyday more and more people are moving to the Bronx. New apartment buildings are constantly under construction. New commercial businesses are finding affordable offices and shops in the Bronx. And this new traffic free plan for Bronx is exactly what is needed to sustain the growth and progress of the Bronx.
New is great but sometimes the stability through time is even better. Consider Parkchester which was built in 1942 and has stood the test of time. Parkchester is composed of 171 four-sided brick buildings, either 8 or 13 stories in height and was designed with aesthetics in mind as evidenced by intricate patterns of brickwork. The development contains 500 terra cotta statuettes and 600 plaques such as bullfighters, animal figurines, soldiers, mermaids and Native American chiefs. Parkchester, the most vibrant and affordable in Bronx NYC rentals, offers reasonably priced apartments that are spacious and airy with windowed kitchens and bathrooms.
The heart of Parkchester lies in the Aileen B. Ryan Oval, formerly called the Metropolitan Oval, where residents relax on benches as they gaze at the water-spouting nymphs in the plaza’s central fountain. Children ride scooters and parents push babies in strollers. There are also art classes, salsa dancing and knitting circles, etc. Supermarkets, clothing stores, restaurants, banks, hair salons, laundromats and a post office are at residents’ doorsteps. The main commercial strip on Metropolitan Avenue has a Starbucks, an Applebee’s restaurant and a Macy’s.
While most new constructions are limited in acreage, Parkchester is laid out over 129 acres with outdoor recreational facilities that include playgrounds, a baseball field and basketball and handball courts.
