What Is The Role of Steel Detailer? What Techniques Do They Use?

A Steel detailer is a person responsible for producing detailed drawings that are required by steel fabricators. The detailer produces detailed plans and documents for the fabrication and erection of the steel members like trusses, beams, columns, handrails, and joists. A steel detailer mainly produces two types of drawings including shop drawings and erection drawings for steel members.

What are shop drawings?

Shop Drawings are the engineering drawings that are used for specifying exact detailing specification to fabricate individual steel member. It contains vital information like material lists, its size, and specification, dimension, welding, bolting, welding, etc. These drawings are then used by fabricators to manufacture components with precision. The drawings do not contain information on the erection or installation of the steel members.

What are erection drawings?

Erection drawings are the drawings used by installation crew to erect steel members on the field. These drawings show detailed Structure Design Plan for locating the steel members, with specific requirements and all work that is to be done in the field.

Standards used by detailers:

The detailers producing Structural Steel Detailing diagrams must comply with one of the standards and codes for giving structural strength and stability. Some of the examples of steel detailing standards include:

    • American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC)

    • American Welding Society (AWS)

    • National Design Specifications (NDS)

    • American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM)

    • Australian Institute of Steel Construction (AISC)

    • Canadian Institute of Steel (CISC)

    • British Standard Codes for steel detailing (BS)

Techniques used for steel detailing process:

Steel detailing was initially carried out using manual methods like the pencil, paper, and drafting tools. Handheld calculators were the only machines then. But today the scenario is different. Computer-aided design or CAD has taken over the manual drafting methods.

A steel detailer uses software for producing the required drawings and then it is printed on paper once they are completed. 3D modeling the widely used concept today which enables steel detailers to provide a better visualization os steel structures being detailed. After creating a 3D model for steel members, all other drawings are produced automatically.

Conclusion:

Structural Steel Detailing is an important concept in Structural Steel Design. A steel detailer is required to produce drawings with high quality and precision. Even a tiny mistake in the drawings will lead to a large amount of loss in terms of time and money.
