Steel Deal In Reinforced Concrete


A widely known fact about concrete: It cannot be used alone as a building Material as it has a high compression strength but a low tensile strength. Hence, if concrete alone is used in construction, there is a chance that such structure will collapse if introduced to higher load or force. Thus, a mechanism is required to provide strength to Concrete Structures. This mechanism is widely known as reinforced concrete in the language of Civil Engineering and Construction
 
Even though there are multiple options available for reinforcing concrete, the best option is Steel. The reason for this is simple: it has several benefits compared to other materials.

Steel versus Aluminum

When it comes down to reinforcing steel, the two of the best-suited materials are aluminum and steel. Even though both have almost same physical characteristics, steel beats aluminum in case of Thermal Expansion. Material with high thermal expansion is used relatively less in reinforcing concrete as temperature changes affect such materials greatly causing it to expand and crack. Aluminum has higher thermal expansion compared to steel and hence it is used less compared to steel for reinforcement process.

  • Ductility: Steel is highly ductile which means it can be easily deformed to take any shape as and when required. This property of steel is called tensile strength. It reduces the chances of a structure getting collapsed.
  • Modulus of elasticity: Steel has same Young’s modulus or modulus of elasticity(2.0 – 2.1 x10^5 N/mm2) so that it can withstand lengthwise tension or compression.
  • Thermal Expansion: The coefficient of thermal expansion for both steel and concrete are same. This ensures bond strength during thermal expansion preventing the bond failure.
  • Easy Recycling: Steel can be easily recycled making it more eco-friendly and cost-effective material.
  • Easy Welding: Steel can be welded easily making it the best material for fabrication (manufacturing) process.
  • Availability: Steel is a widely available material at cheaper rates compared to other ductile materials.

Role of Steel Detailing 
 
The process of preparing ‘shop’ drawings for steel members in Reinforced Concrete is called rebar(reinforced bar) detailing. At first, the design engineer develops design drawings indicating the size of material, its orientation and location in 3D space, connection details, material specification, and lot more. These drawings are not informative enough for any contractor or manufacturer to start cutting the material. Thus, shop drawings are produced by a contractor to cut the material to exact size, length, shape, and place the bolt holes at the correct place. 
 
Apart from this, there are detail drawings used to demonstrate regulations for assembly and junctions between the components.Steel Detail Drawingsis used forSteel Construction Detailingto manufacture and erect steel members like columns, beams, trusses, handrails, etc. These drawings are critical to any construction project and they must be produced by steel detailers having sound knowledge ofsteel construction detailing.
