Lab Safety – 10 Precautionary Measures to Take While Working in Labs

Once you install the best furniture for your laboratory, the next step is to well maintain it. When it comes to its maintenance, it could be best served if appropriate Safety measures are ensured within the premises. Morayme provides with the best suitable lab furniture and certain equipments to handle the sudden hazards. But it is also important to follow the rules seriously, since it is the professors', assistants', as well as the students' responsibility to make sure that each one of them is safe. In order to prevent accidents, we list some precautionary measures to take while working in the labs for the sake of the lab safety.

1. Be aware of the safety equipment(s)– It is highly crucial that everyone who is using the lab is aware of where the safety equipments are kept. This will prevent them from going completely numb and clueless, if something suddenly happens to them and/or others. Also, keep a note of the monthly/yearly maintenance of those equipments to ensure that they work when in need.

For instance, always check whether the safety shower and eye wash are working and the water comes out in full flow, if required. Also check if the water coming out is clean.

2. Dress appropriately – Wear the appropriate apron to prevent your clothing from discoloration or damage. Also wear safety goggles, long pants, covered shoes, etc. Do not forget to tie your hair properly or wear caps, so that these don't come in between (or perhaps catch the flame) while carrying an experiment. You might also need to wear accessories to protect yourself from high frequency hearing. The high frequency sounds do not appear on the surface to be damaging but are known to be silently damaging the ears and altering one's hearing ability.

3. Do NOT eat or drink in the lab – One must avoid eating or drinking in the laboratory, despite of their urges and addictions. This is because the food or drink you happen to be consuming may get contaminated soon and could be unsuitable for consumption. You may also touch these items with bare hands that are already exposed to chemicals while performing experiments. Having drinking water or coffee increases the risk of spilling on the lab notebook, or perhaps ruin the ongoing experiments. These likely distract one's mind and attention from the seriousness.

4. NEVER play Mad Scientist – Always have the tendency to act responsibly and never randomly mix the chemicals for fun. This can result into anything like explosion, fire, expel of toxic gases, and even deaths. This would cause great damage to not only just the person who does that but also the personnels and/or property.

5. Dispose the laboratory waste properly– It is very important that you dispose all kinds of waste in a proper manner, whether it is solid, liquid waste, or gaseous substances. Do not forget to clean the mess. This is because leaving it for the next person to wind it up before starting his/her own new experiment would unnecessarily waste their time, which is already very limited. It is considered as one of the lab etiquettes.

Disposing the stuffs would also prevent the environment from getting spoiled. Always have general questions in mind like “Are chemicals safe to get dumped in drain?”, “What should I do with the sharp needles, broken glasses and knives?”, “Is it safe to clean the biological cultures with soap and water?”, “How would I kill the potentially dangerous organisms?”, and so on. If you are not sure about what is to be done then immediately contact your lab supervisor.

6. Never sniff or taste chemical stuffs– This is particularly for those who have just started going to chemistry laboratories quite recently. It is normal and obvious that new students/researches get extensively curious and start observing the existing chemicals and resources they are being provided. Therefore, touching, sniffing, tasting, etc. might happen. Even sniffing the chemicals could be extremely dangerous, forget about touching and tasting. Hence, it is best that labels are kept. In general, the labels are always there in a well recognized laboratories and there is no confusion regarding what a particular chemical is about.

7. Handle lab accidents with care – First of all, never try to hide if anything bad happens. Always inform the supervisor if you get (minor or major) cut, bitten by a lab animal, are exposed to a chemical, or spill something. This is because along with you, your fellow members might also get exposed to the toxic chemicals, pathogens, etc., and that would be a whole lot of trouble. Also, never hesitate to admit if something went wrong because of you.

8. Avoid taking your lab experiments at home– It is best practice to leave the lab experiments in the laboratory itself. You might be susceptible to spills or loss of a specimen, or perhaps an accident like fire or explosion, whose immediate measures could not be taken because of lack of emergency resources.

9. Never experiment on yourself – Don't be over confident on whatever experiment you do. This is because it would be too risky for your own health and well being. It is not a fantasy movie in which suddenly you get super-powers like Hulk or Captain America. Such kinds of things never practically happened till date. If you perform such experiments on yourself then get ready to face serious consequences as well, like high blood pressure, exposure to poison, cardiac arrest, sudden death, etc. The chances are higher that whatever you do on yourself would be unsuccessful.

10. Always go through the lab manual– Before you start performing anything, just follow the instructions as told by the lab supervisor(s) and the manual they provide which covers detail oriented general norms and all lab safety related rules. Also, read everything carefully to know the usual protocols.

So, since you know the precautionary measures to take while working in labs from now onwards, we wish you luck for making it a responsible and successful journey.
