Moms: What Your 10-18 Year Old Daughter Would Say to You If She Knew How (10 of 33 Things from the book) MOTHERS AND TEEN DAUGHTERS HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS

·

Mom: From me leaving my clothes in the middle of the floor, refusing to clean my room, sleeping in, ignoring the curfews you set, choosing less than desirable friends, leaving dirty dishes in the sink, dressing one way when I get up to go to school in the mornings and you finding out I’m wearing a completely different outfit during a surprise visit to my school, we fight about a lot of things. I need you to take your motherly stance and not waiver.

Right now, I don’t have the elaborate vocabulary that you have nor do I know what you know, yet, in my mind, I know everything. I wish I could find the words to say what I’m sure I’ll tell you when I’m older and wiser. Anyway, here’s what I would say if I knew how to now:

1. I need you to endure our fights.
2. I’m not ready to understand.
3. I will understand, later.
4. I learn more by what you do than what you say. Please be patient with the process of me becoming a woman.
5. I’m just trying to figure myself out…it’s so complex right now.
6. Good days and bad days, I need you to Love me even when I seemingly don’t love you back. I have awkward ways of showing it, but, I do.
7. I need you to be my voice of reason even when I’m talking back and rolling my eyes.
8. When I seem to dismiss all of the good you’ve taught me. I need you to remind me.
9. I need you to be strong and hold on while I totally obliterate most of your idea of raising a well adjusted daughter.
10. I need you to know that when we’re arguing what I say and what I mean are two different things. Don’t hold my words against me.
I know that my reactions to your motherly responsibilities are not always gratifying. I realize that I oftentimes mock what you say and the way you do things. I need for you to stand in your strength to endure my Growing Pains and trust that when this phase is over I will make you feel like I’m your greatest accomplishment.
