Trailer: Guy Ritchie Updates the Tale of King Arthur into a Modern, Tongue-in-Cheek Blockbuster Starring Charlie Hunnam

The trailer for Guy Ritchie‘s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword opens with an intense chase sequence (probably) inspired by the one in Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream (2000) and straight away you know this is no ordinary blockbuster about a famous King. It’s a high energy 5th century epic with a very modern temperament that doesn’t take itself too seriously. It is refreshing to see a blockbuster break free – even slightly – from the bankable formula, but let’s hope it won’t be all style and no substance. Ritchie’s last project The Man from U.N.C.L.E (2015) was just that – a high octane visual spectacle with a weak story and a useless screenplay. There is a chance it will be a great piece of entertainment.

Ritchie has brought in Charlie Hunnam – confusing accent and all – to play King Arthur. In this adaptation of the tale, we find him before he is aware of his royal lineage, running the back passages of Londonium with his crew. After pulling the sword from the stone he joins the rebellion and must understand the powers of his new weapon to defeat the callous dictator Vortigern (frequent Ritchie collaborator Jude Law) – the man who murdered his parents and stole his crown to become King.

The cast features Eric BanaKatie McGrathAnnabelle Wallis, Kamil Lemieszewski and Aidan Gillen, who must be right at home in this story, due to his role in Game of Thrones. The one to watch is Astrid Berges-Frisbey who gave a magnetic performance in I Origins (2014). This is rumoured to be the first of a six film series. King Arthur: Legend of the Sword isn’t due in cinemas until March of next year, so in the meantime you can watch the trailer below.
