Once upon a time I was considered a Visual Basic programming Guru. I had contracts writing Software Applications for businesses all over Britain as well as working in Madrid and Paris. I was even offered a job in New York. I wrote apps before anyone had coined the term app. I have sold my apps (what we used to lovingly call software applications) all over the world, even to the United States Military. That was more than half a lifetime ago, before software became complicated. That was in a time when you bought floppy disks to upgrade your PC operating system.
These days I’m no longer a guru, I’m a Gnu instead. It’s a phrase I’ve coined to indicate the opposite to guru. We computer Gnu’s are slow to understand, hard to please and above all we think Microsoft have made their flagship operating system, Windows, so complicated to use we’re seriously thinking of taking up knitting.
Actually, there is a Gnu Project and an open source operating system, so it’s not really completely my idea… I’ve just borrowed the sentiment! But I may well try this Gnu software as I’m sick to death of getting the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) when I’m using my PC.
The BSOD isn’t new, it’s been around for a while and happens when your PC takes exception to software doing something it doesn’t like. All operating systems have these annoying glitches, except with Windows 10 it seems to be designed to be annoying, as if it’s a release of the new version of Windows 10 written by a team of Gremlins! Give me strength Microsoft, you’ve upgraded my operating system and replaced a perfectly good version with one written by Russian hackers! My PC gives me the finger (BSOD) up to five times a day. The only time it doesn’t is when it’s switched off! I’ve even had it writing this piece! Ahhhh!!!
There, I’ve had my rant… I’m happyish now, until the next time.
Don’t accept second best, people. Call it as it is, it’s Software Applications.
