Well, I think I Nailed It with the SUO Challenge while using the NEW Stampin’ Up! Watercolor Pencils and Hexagon Dynamic Textured Impressions Embossing Folder!  It is time for another challenge from Stampin’ Up! Only Challenges. The new challenge features an Embossing Theme with either dry embossing or heat embossing. The SUOC Team invites you to play along as this challenge starts today and ends on Friday, January 27th @ 6 AM EST.

 SUO! Challenges 166

This past weekend I was at a fun stamping event as part of the North Carolina Stampin’ Up! Demonstrators group.  The NC demo’s group is, to the best of my knowledge, a unique group in that we don’t know of any other states that has a large group of demonstrators that have come together to support each other.  The NC Stampin’ Up! Demos holds quarterly meetings where we get together for Shoebox Swaps, sharing ideas, training, make & takes and business training.  Tamra Davis was the NC Demo host and put together an amazing event with lots of free gifts and prizes.  I had the honor of demonstrating various techniques using the Watercolor Pencils. The technique is called Dry Blending which uses the Whisper White Watercolor Pencil to blend the colors.

Today’s card actually uses a couple of techniques and to stick with the embossing theme, I used the NEW Hexagons Dynamic Textured Impressions Embossing Folder which I inked with Basic Black Archival Ink to highlight the hexagon design.  Then I also feature the Urban Underground Suite of products along with the Nailed It Stamp Set and Stampin’ Up! Watercolor Pencils.

Nailed It with Dry Blending Card Recipe:

  • The card base is Very Vanilla layered with Delightful Dijon then the top card layer featuring the Hexagons Dynamic Textured Impressions Embossing Folder.
  • Along the left edge, I added a strip of the Urban Underground Specialty Designer Series Paper which adds to the urban, masculine design.
  • I added Urban Underground Designer Washi Tape along the edge of the designer series paper then finished with an Urban Underground embellishment.
  • The main element of the card features the Nailed It Bundle with the Saw and Build It Framelits Dies. A Delightful Dijon hexagon sets the background tone for the layered element.
  • I stamped then colored the saw using the Stampin’ Up! Watercolor Pencils.  The colors used are Basic Gray, Early Espresso, Basic Black and Whisper White. As previous mentioned, the technique used to color the saw is called Dry Blending by using the Whisper White Watercolor Pencil.
  • What is Dry Blending? You start by coloring your image with the chosen colors while keeping in mind the shading you wish to maintain which means some portion of your image will have more color then lighten.  The blade of the saw is colored with Basic Gray and the handle is Early Espresso.  I used the Whisper White by starting at the darkest point of the colored image then with heavy pressure I colored with the Whisper White over the previous colors.  I kept coloring with the Whisper White until I had the effect that I wanted.
  • Why use Dry Blending?  This technique is perfect for a metallic appearance.  The Whisper White will lighten the colors used and creates a metallic feel when used with the Basic Gray or Basic Black.

Don’t forget to visit the SUO! Challenges Blog to check out the creations from the other Design Team members!
