Interview with Horror Author Lori M Myers

In this article we have an exclusive interview with Horror Author Lori M. Myers, Author of the Crawlspace. Let’s get this interview started.
Jonuel: Does Writing energize or exhaust you?
Lori: There are occasions when the thought of sitting down to write feels like an arduous task that seems impossible to do well. Those are the times when my mind is filled with ideas floating around up there with little organization. Then I sit down to write and, at a certain point, I’m in another place, another world. The characters begin doing their own thing and they are a few steps ahead of me actually telling ME their story instead of the other way around. It’s exhilarating. I love being in that zone. Those are some of the best moments for me as a Writer.
Jonuel: Do you think someone could be a writer if they don’t feel emotions strongly?
Lori: I think there’s a difference between “feeling” emotions strongly in day to day living, and “possessing” emotions within oneself. I’ve known writers who write characters and plots that surprise me because it belies the persona they show to others. I do think having emotions “somewhere,” whether having strong reactions outwardly or deeply embedded is imperative to get into the hearts and minds of your characters. Readers relate to what characters go through in their journeys and they want to take that journey with them. Emotions are one way to go on that ride.
Jonuel: What was the best money you ever spent as a writer?
Lori: The best money I spent was actually money I didn’t have to spend. My writing passion dates back to when I was a child. I wrote, made up stories, preferred books over toys. After college I toiled in the corporate world while a more creative life was on the back burner. I began freelancing from time to time, collecting my clippings, making writing contacts. Then I got laid off from my job. I sprawled on my bed, sobbed, and wondered how I would pay my bills and feel financially secure. After about an hour of that nonsense, I picked myself up (literally and figuratively) and became a fulltime writer by the simple act of persistence. I can’t begin to tell you how happy I am now. I’ll never be rich, but my life is so much richer.
Jonuel: What are the most important magazines for writers to subscribe to?
Lori: I teach many workshops for both aspiring and experienced writers. I always recommend Writers Digest and Poets & Writers to not only get the latest writing techniques but to also find out what is happening in the industry. Along with magazines, I also point out websites where writers can find out about markets for their work. One I give to other writers is Duotrope. I tend to avoid paying for a subscription for anything writing-related, but the exception is the Duotrope site. It’s a great database for short fiction markets and is kept up-to-date. For horror writers, I like Darkmarkets.
Jonuel: What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
Lori: I once read that there should always be a point when a writer should begin writing or, at least, get something down on the page or screen, even if the entire research process has not been completed. I adhere to that advice. I love doing research and the internet makes it easy to go from one site to another to another. After a while, though, one has to get writing. Readers don’t need to know every detail of how to build a car, for example. They just need to know that the engine and the main parts have been assembled and are ready to go. Because I write horror, I tell people that the FBI would have a field day with my computer’s hard drive. Although I’m such a peaceful human being, I’ve had to research how a knife can be impaled into someone’s skull or how a bullet does damage to the human body.
