5 Things that robotics can never do better than humans

As we get further and further into this new digital world, we see digital Technology and robotics growing at a rapid pace.

It seems to be growing so much that it’s actually replacing humans in factories, technology companies, and even medicine. As these robots continue to develop and meet our ever-demanding needs, there has been a growing fear that they may replace people in the workforce, and maybe even at home.

While they can perform tasks and build other machines, there are some things that humans will always have over our computing counterparts. Here are five qualities digital technology will never replace.

Prediction v. Outcome

Computers are great at algorithms. They are able to predict any virtual Outcome of any situation, and most of the time, they’re right.

Information technology uses data to predict outcomes based on patterns from previous scenarios, as well as stats from individual variables in the equation. For instance, Nate Silver, the data phenomenon that accurately predicted the outcome of the 2012 presidential election, made a prediction using many of the same algorithms for the outcome of the 2014 World Cup.

Silver used game patterns, players’ statistics, and other data to come ti his conclusion – much in the way a computer would. Silver predicted Brazil would win over Germany 7 to 1.

He said Brazil’s chance of winning with a six-point lead was 65%, which is pretty substantial in any scenario.

However, people can surprise you. Germany came back to defeat Brazil, leaving Silver and his loyal followers absolutely stunned. So, no matter how accurate a machine’s data may be, the free will of people can be an astounding thing.

Service v. Smile

The idea of robotics is built to do a job, and that’s what they will do. Humans are apt to interact in situations, and that’s what they’ll do.

New technology has given us easier ways to do things, but at what personal cost? For example, say I want to return something to a store. I have the option of using the customer service line and speaking to a person, or I could use the quicker kiosk and have a machine perform the task.

If I opt for the kiosk, I will be done faster and have more time for whatever it is I have going on that day. It’s quick, easy, and efficient. However, if I go to the customer service counter and speak to the person who is there to help me, I will have a more personal experience. The kiosk will deliver a service, but the person delivers a smile.

Robotics Cannot Be Innovative

Understand soft robotics and why they are the future

As great as information technology is, it will never perform at the same capacity as the human brain.

Tasks can be performed, and developments are possible, but only people can innovate. If you throw a robot a curve ball while it’s working on a task, it may just ignore the situation altogether, whereas people can acclimate to different scenarios, and even change up their process if unplanned situations occur. Machines cannot be built to be as innovative as the human race.

Tech Will Never Surpass Expectations

A computer will carry out a task using only the instructions it is given. It can be designed to meet expectations, but will never surpass them on its own.

On the other hand, people are able to raise the bar themselves and perform tasks with a greater outcome than originally expected of them. While machines can be instructed to add something extra or take away a step when performing a task, it is actually the human spontaneity and initiative behind that instruction that gets the credit.

Customize v Personalize

New technology brings a lot to the table in many different ways, but it will never have the ability to connect with a human on a personal level.

In most scenarios, a computer can customize an experience based on the needs and desires of the consumer, but it will take a human to make a deeper personal connection to enhance the consumer’s experience.

Robots don’t have emotions, and they never will. Emotions are a human trait that cannot be duplicated in any non-organic form.

Having empathy will actually take humanity a long way. In a recent survey by Steven Van Belleghem, and shown as a keynote via LinkedIn, it was discovered that people thrive on human interaction they cannot receive through using technology.

In the service industry, 92% of consumers want to deal with a person, someone who can relate to them in a way machines never will.

As we continue to develop technology, we will also be evolving as human beings. Due to this, we will always be many steps ahead of the game when it comes to advanced technological achievements. So fear not, your job is not up for grabs by a robot, and you have a lot to offer the world.
